Kitten Healthcare
At your kitten’s first visit it will be examined from nose to tail by an experienced small animal veterinary surgeon. Every system will be checked for anatomical problems and a full parasite check will be done. Your kitten will also be weighed so that its growth and development can be monitored.
Common things to rule out with kittens include; respiratory infections (such as cat flu), ear mites and fleas.
At this first appointment we will go through all of the following....

Vaccination
Kittens can have their first vaccines from nine weeks of age. Kittens are vaccinated against Cat Flu, Panleucopaenia and feline leukaemia virus.
Vaccination against Chlamydia is also available if requested.
The second vaccine is given at twelve weeks of age. Immunity is complete one week after the second vaccine.
It is very important not to let your kitten out until it is fully vaccinated. Panleucopaenia kills kittens and feline herpes virus will cause a life long infection of your cat.
Parasite Check
This includes checking for ear mites, looking for evidence of fleas or mites in the coat or skin and ensuring the kitten has been properly wormed.
If your kitten has diarrhoea it could potentially have “giardia” a parasite that can be spread to humans, checks for this parasite can be done in the practice to ensure your family is not at risk.
Treatment for this parasite is straight forward if it is diagnosed.
All kittens will receive a FREE WORMER AND FLEA TREATMENT
Nutrition
Kittens require a balanced and well formulated kitten food for their first 12 months of life after which they can be changed onto an adult cat food.
At Leonard Brothers Veterinary Centre we recommend Royal Canin Kitten. Royal Canin kitten is formulated to give the very best balance of nutrition to a growing kitten.
There may be tastier foods available to kittens but these are often high in fat or salt and not of the best quality for a growing kitten.
We would always recommend dry foods for cats and the Royal Canin kitten and cat food are especially formulated to keep teeth clean.
We offer a buy back guarantee on all Royal Canin food should your kitten not like it.
Give your kitten the best start in life by feeding it the best – recommended by your own vet. (Please visit the nutrition page of the website for more information.)
You will be given a free voucher booklet, with money off the range of royal Canin diets, to the value of £12 at your first visit with your kitten.
Insurance
All owners of kittens under 12 months of age are offered a four week cover note from Petplan if they are not already insured.
Insurance is highly recommended for your kitten for any unseen illness or injury.
There are many insurance companies out there and Leonard Brothers Veterinary Centre believes that Petplan offers the best. (Please see our insurance webpage for more information.)
Don’t get caught out without insurance!
Microchipping
Kittens are usually microchipped at their first or second vaccine. It is a simple and quick procedure that can be done to help return your lost pet to you with the minimum fuss or worry.
Our microchips are also suitable for the pet passport scheme should you wish to bring your pet on holiday abroad with you.
“We aim to give you and your kitten the best possible start to ensure many happy years together”
