Pet Passports
Pet Passports
Want to take your pet abroad?
Taking your pet abroad is a fairly straightforward process.... bringing it home again is the technical part. The Pet Passport Scheme has simplified the whole thing and opens up the European Union and beyond for owners who wish to travel with their pets.
All EU countries are currently covered under the scheme and also a number of non-EU countries.

Why have Pet Passports?
This scheme has been set up to protect HUMANS from rabies and other diseases, not PETS. This is important to understand as there are diseases that can be caught abroad that can have severe implications for your pet that are not covered on the scheme. If you are thinking of traveling abroad, as well as sorting out your pet passport it is very important to have a parasite prevention plan.
What’s involved?
To travel under the Pet Travel Scheme, your pet will have to be....
Fitted with a microchip
Vaccinated against Rabies
Issued with your Pet Passport
?
Parasite transmitted diseases
BABESIOSIS - transmitted by ticks, small parasite that attacks red blood cells.
EHRLICHIOSIS - transmitted by ticks, causes fever, bleeding, severe eye disease.
LEISHMANIASIS - transmitted by sandflies. Severe disease that can affect many organs and often causes death (can be caught by humans)
HEARTWORM - transmitted by mosquitoes. Worms migrate to the heart causing symptoms often many months later.
Contrary to some people’s belief, mainland Europe is not a ‘disease ridden hell-hole’. It’s actually ‘very nice’.
However, there are some diseases found there, not found in the UK, transmitted by ticks and biting flies.
Ticks in the UK??
Yes, we have them as well, as anyone who has walked their dog over heathland will tell you. They transmit LYME DISEASE which can prove to be severe in presentation but thankfully rarely so. We also have many other parasites of note including, of course, FLEAS, TAPEWORMS and ROUNDWORMS - some of which can be transmitted to humans.
EVEN IF YOUR PET IS NOT GOING TO TRAVEL THEN IT IS STILL VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE A PROPER PARASITE PREVENTION PLAN!
