We will make sure all of the following are sorted out for you at this first appointment.....

Vaccination

Puppies can have their first vaccines from six weeks of age.

Puppies are vaccinated against Distemper, Parvo-virus, Parainfluenza, Infectious Hepatitis and Leptospirosis.

Kennel cough vaccine is frequently given to puppies going to puppy classes, visiting shows or going into kennels.

The second vaccine is given at ten weeks of age.

Immunity is complete one week after the second vaccine.

It is very important not to let your puppy out onto pavements or parks until it is fully vaccinated.

Parvo-viral enteritis has been seen in Whitchurch and will kill puppies.

Parasite Check

Most puppies arrive with a few hitch-hikers.

This part of the examination includes checking for ear mites, looking for evidence of fleas or mites in the coat or skin, and ensuring the puppy has been properly wormed.

“A puppy with worms may have as much as 15,000 worm eggs per gram of faeces… that’s 80,000 worm eggs in a teaspoon full!”

Puppies require much more frequent worming as adults.

Behavioural Advice

Lots of people will give you advice on looking after a new puppy, we aim to give the very best advice from qualified and experienced vets and nurses.

Should you have any question about your puppy no matter how minor just pick the phone up or call in.

Toilet training, play biting, aggression and puppies that eat their own faeces are very common problems that with the right advice can be sorted out.

Nutrition

Puppies grow very quickly and by as little as 8-12 months of age can be fully grown.

Some of our larger breed puppies will grow at well over a kilogramme per week.

At Leonard Brothers Veterinary Centre we recommend Royal Canin junior food. Royal Canin Junior is formulated to give the very best balance of nutrition to a growing puppy. There may be tastier foods available to dogs but these are often high in fat or salt and not of the best quality for a growing puppy.

We offer a buy back guarantee on all Royal Canin food should your puppy not like it.

Give your puppy the best start in life by feeding it the best – recommended by your own vet. (Please visit the nutrition page of the website for more information).

You will be given a free voucher booklet, with money off the range of royal Canin diets, to the value of £19 at your first visit with your puppy.

Insurance

All owners of puppies under 12 months old are offered a four week cover note from Petplan if they are not already insured.

Insurance is highly recommended for your puppy for any unseen illness or injury.

There are many insurance companies out there and Leonard Brothers Veterinary Centre believes that Petplan offers the best.

Don’t get caught out without insurance.

Microchipping

Puppies are usually microchipped at their first or second vaccine. It is a simple and quick procedure that can be done to help return your lost pet to you with the minimum fuss or worry.

Our microchips are also suitable for the pet passport scheme should you wish to bring your pet on holiday abroad with you.

We aim to give you and your puppy the best possible start to ensure many happy years together
