Veterinary Diets
Feeding a pet an appropriate diet is a very important part of responsible pet ownership. There are a huge variety of pet food brands out there of varying quality. If you are wanting to feed a commercially prepared pet food then it is important to pick one that provides the right balance of nutrients for your pet.
Feeding the wrong diet can result in severe medical problems that will have a big impact on your pet’s welfare.
Wet or Dry?
For the majority of cats and dogs we always recommend Royal Canin dried food. This is because they are far better for the dental health of the pet. Wet foods sit on the teeth allowing bacteria to thrive, resulting in smelly breath and dental disease.

Occasionally there will be a medical reason to feed wet food (such as recurrent cystitis) but these cases are fairly uncommon.
Additionally dried food is easier to handle, has less packaging and much better value for money (often much cheaper per day).
All Hills food comes with a money back guarantee if your pet does not like it.
Different breeds have different requirements. For that reason Hills has Mini, Regular and Large Breed varieties of its dog food.
A Chihuahua has very different needs to a Great Dane!
Puppy/Kitten, Adult or Senior?
A pets nutritional requirements changes over time. Puppies and Kittens need a much higher plane of nutrition to allow them to grow properly and ‘hoon around’ (not a technical term but you know what we mean).
Most breeds should be fed Puppy/Kitten food until 12 months of age. Occasionally larger breeds of dog will require longer as they take longer to reach full adult size.
Senior foods should be fed from 7 years onwards. At this age a pet will benefit from a food that is developed to reduce load on kidneys and other organs. Senior foods are lower in calories to match the more sedate level of exercise that comes with age.
Neutered or Not?
Neutered pets are often prone to becoming overweight and as a result are at much higher risk of several diseases such as:
Diabetes, Arthritis, Heart Disease, Bladder Stones
The Royal Canin Neutered diets are designed to prevent this weight gain post surgery whilst still satisfying the pets hunger.
This design prevents the requirement for a ‘light’ diet.
It is much easier to prevent obesity than to treat it!

Prescription Diets
A lot of pet disorders can now be controlled or eliminated with a change of diet. This reduces the need to use other drugs at high doses, or in some cases, at all. Using the appropriate diet can make a massive difference to pets with a variety of conditions, either by controlling symptoms such as excessive scratching in skin allergy cases, to prolonging their lives in kidney disease. All these diets are prescription only and will only be given to pets with conditions diagnosed by a veterinary surgeon.
